The Newtown Memorial Fund is an all-volunteer group organized to help the families of the 26 victims, as well as the survivors and community members who are continually affected by the shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
The robustness of the database, level of trust with the information provided and overall positive experience with having a designated account rep—is essentially what sold Cision.

While news coverage has been a leading source for increasing awareness for the non-profit, headlines change with time, and the Newtown Memorial Fund has been in search of a solution that would allow them to reach a broader audience with their mission.
“I used Cision years before and was extremely comfortable with the ease of use which is why we immediately looked there first,” says Amy Bailey, Communications Committee Volunteer for the Newtown Memorial Fund. “The robustness of the database, level of trust with the information provided and overall positive experience with having a designated account rep – is essentially what sold Cision. We looked at a Cision competitor, but their platform was too complex and they weren’t as personalized.”
A non-profit organization, the Newtown Memorial Fund is dedicated to creating a sustainable fund to provide for the immediate and ongoing needs of those affected by the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, to construct a physical memorial honoring the lives lost on December 14, 2012, and to establish academic scholarships to honor those lost in this tragedy for future generations of Newtown students.
The Newtown Memorial Fund was searching for a way to get their message across to an audience on an international scale in order to secure relationships and generate donations for their mission.
Cision offered the Newtown Memorial Fund a comprehensive list of over 1.6 million media contacts and outlets in its media database and allowed them to connect with their targeted audience through its press release distribution.
We now have the ability to reach worldwide, which is having a measurable impact thanks to Cision.
Spreading the Word with Cision’s Media Database and Press Release Distribution
The Newtown Memorial Fund has a clear goal: to spread awareness about what they are doing in Sandy Hook and generate donations for those affected by the events of December 14, 2012. After nine months of working with Cision’s Media Database they have grown from working with a regional (Northeastern) media list to a national/international media list.
“We now have the ability to reach worldwide, which is having a measurable impact thanks to Cision. We are able to continue receiving donations from all over the world because we have the ability to keep our message out there. The searching features that Cision offers are detail oriented, which allow us to drill down on each of our key targets and know that we are getting up-to-date information, which is vital,” says Newtown Memorial Fund Founder, Brian Mauriello.
Cision’s Press Release Distribution software is also playing a heavy role in the Newtown Memorial Fund’s content strategy. With local and national events occurring regularly on behalf of the organization, Cision’s platform is helping them distribute their press releases, photos, videos and more to the rest of the world to help drive contributions.
“It’s so easy to get our news out there. From local events to large events like the Hartford and New York Marathons – we have supporters raising money on our behalf and individuals contacting us every day that read or heard about us in various media. Cision allows us to expand awareness and receive support from all over the world,” says Mauriello.
The database is a breadth of accuracy, far and wide. It provides everything our organization needs.

The Newtown Memorial Fund looks forward with Cision
Having been a Cision customer for almost one year now, the Newtown Memorial Fund has seen a surge in the number of media list contacts on both a national and international scale. With no end in sight, the Newtown Memorial Fund is looking at the relationship with Cision as one of their many positive decisions.
Bailey says, “If I were to give advice to someone considering a PR platform, it would be to look at service – it’s very important. When you have information that needs to get out, or a critical target that needs to be contacted, you must be able to trust the software and the team behind it. That’s Cision, especially with the training opportunities and the constant checking in with us. The database is a breadth of accuracy, far and wide. It provides everything our organization needs.”
