Located in Los Angeles, California, McKendall Communications has been providing PR support to clients across multiple industries for over 10 years.
Originally part of a larger PR agency, Lisa McKendall, President of McKendall Communications, ventured off in 2001 to start her own firm, which catered to clients requesting strategic and tactical assistance. As a startup, McKendall says they were looking at everything from a cost perspective, which required them to cut tools like Cision out of the budget and perform their database needs manually.
We found it difficult to identify the correct journalists to contact in areas outside of those where we primarily work.
“Coming from a large PR firm that used Cision, we quickly realized it would be the best tool for us,” McKendall said. “However as a small PR shop, we thought it would be cost-prohibitive. We lasted about six months without Cision before we knew we needed it, so we signed up.”
Before deciding on Cision as a solution, McKendall said they were having difficulty identifying the right journalists at the right outlets. “While we have great relationships with the journalists in the industries where we work, we found it difficult to identify the correct journalists to contact in areas outside of those where we primarily work,” McKendall said. “On top of that, it was even more difficult to find up-to-date information like email addresses and phone numbers.”
McKendall Communications is a Public Relations consulting firm offering strategic and tactical support to meet any client’s public relations or communications objective.
After five years using Cision’s Media Database, McKendall Communications left Cision to test out a competing platform which offered unlimited user licenses at a lower price. However, what they gained in initial cost savings, they lost in data quality and found themselves rushing to sign back with Cision months later.
Cision offered the small PR firm its media database, which the firm had originally been using to search and connect with journalists before leaving briefly for a competing platform. Cision’s Media Database offers users contact information on over 1.6 million influencers and outlets and makes over 20,000 updates daily.
Cision has the most up-to-date information, is thorough and very intuitive.
A media database for a PR startup
McKendall said when she started McKendall Communications, the criteria for a PR software tool included having up-to-date data, an in-depth database, easy usability and it had to be affordable.
“I had used Cision formerly and found it to be a great solution,” she said. “Now, using it for my own PR firm—and after trying out some of the competition—I can say that Cision has the most up-to-date information, is thorough and very intuitive. I’m excited to dive in and learn about all the functionality of the database and the system.”
Returning to a solution that has proven solid
After having used Cision for the past five years, McKendall recently left for a few months to test out a competitors software, which offered unlimited user logins at a discounted rate. After using the platform for a few months, McKendall rushed back to her rep at Cision to get back on CisionPoint.
“They guaranteed they had the same depth of data as Cision and the tool would meet our needs,” McKendall said. “We quickly discovered this was not the case—the database was nowhere near as robust as Cision’s and the information was often dated. We are safely back at Cision once again!”
Now that McKendall Communications is back with Cision it is unlikely they will be leaving anytime soon. While connecting back with her Cision rep, McKendall stated that Cision has a “client for life.”
Our media relations campaigns are far more successful for our clients when we are using Cision’s platform…
“Thanks to Cision, we are able to quickly respond to client requests,” McKendall said. “With our previous service, we would spend extra hours conducting our own research because the information we needed was not available. We found ourselves researching our own media outlets and contacts, bouncing email addresses and getting stuck on human-less voicemail systems of major media outlets when direct dial numbers were not provided—all for a service that we were paying for!”
“With Cision, we are able to jump on projects quickly, communicate with the right people and secure results our clients are looking for,” she continued. “Our media relations campaigns are far more successful for our clients when we are using Cision’s platform because we are saving hours of time, which relates to billable hours that can be spent doing strategic work.”
“If you are interested in working with a service that is comprehensive and easy-to-use, then I recommend Cision,” McKendall said.
